In this lesson we will look at the difference
between a very stated and literal approach to playing jazz time, and
a looser more implied approach.
Many earlier jazz styles (particularly those around the Trad Jazz, New Orleans and Swing Eras) had a more stated and obvious approach to the time feel. Many of these styles were primarily the dance styles of the time, so a fairly simple pattern was often played. As you move forward through the decades through bebop, bop post bop, modern jazz, avant garde etc the styles (particularly with the African American influence) became more intellectual, and the time feel became more implied and less stated.
