HOW TO CONTROL SPEEDS

There is a very simple concept that works for controlling speeds, and it actually works for your pedal technique as well. If you want to play slower, use a bit more arm in the stroke (meaning pivot a little at the elbow). Here you're using the larger muscles in the upper arm to help stabilize and control the stroke. As you speed up into medium tempos convert to pivoting predominantly at the wrist. For medium fast tempos gradually add more fingers into the wrist stroke. For fast tempos, use majority fingers. The fingers are a smaller muscle mass than the wrist and therefore can move faster than the wrist.

Always remain relaxed and flowing with your technique. You are probably always using a combination of arm, wrist and fingers at all tempos, but its just a matter of how much of which to get what speed.
