USING TRIPLETS TO EVEN OUT YOUR ROLLS

Do your rolls sound bland? Here's how to use a crescendo to give your rolls some shape. Instead of playing your doubles at the one low consistent volume (which is certainly a valid and musical approach), you can give your rolls a different impact, by doing the following:

1) Throw down the first note hard like you normally would
2) Immediately drop down to the lowest (and therefore softest) stick height
3) Simultaeneously play these soft notes at the edge of the drum
4) Gradually increase the stick height throughout the duration of the roll, getting louder
5) Simultaeneously bring the sticks into the centre of the drum (the centre of the drum is louder than the edge)
